The Bev Origin Story
Founded by Alix Peabody in May 2017, Bev is a mission-driven beverage company based in Venice, California that is making strides in the traditionally male-dominated industry with flavorful, healthier wines. While working in Silicon Valley, Peabody found out her chronic abdominal pain was an ovarian torsion, which accounts for 1% of all emergency ovary surgeries. Due to multiple, intensive surgeries, she had to decide, at 24, if she wanted to freeze her eggs. While the costs of her surgeries were covered under insurance, freezing her eggs and ensuring the healthy future of her fertility — were not. Frozen eggs and $20,000 later, Peabody started an events company that hosted ticketed parties to pay off the debt.
Her experience in the events planning industry inspired her to build a company that helped women feel comfortable in social situations. She took money out of her 401K (not a recommended strategy) and bought 300 gallons of rosé, the first Bev varietal. While she didn’t have the license to sell the products yet, she passed them out at parties — designed by women, for women — to share her idea and generate some buzz around her new brand. The drinks caught on, and Bev was born. Five varietals and thousands of happy customers later, Bev is continuing to empower women and “break the glass” through great-tasting, sugar-free, femme-focused, socially-designed wine.
