Three Ships Beauty Review

The Bottom Line

I’ll admit that my skin can be very… fussy. After years of fighting off cystic acne, melasma and seborrheic keratoses, I finally have my skincare routine pretty locked down.

Over the past year, I’ve been more proactive about swapping out my old skincare faves with more nourishing, natural products (after all, doesn’t my largest organ deserve the same level of consciousness I provide to the rest of my body?) – behold, Three Ships Beauty. This plant-based, natural beauty brand is basically a one-stop-shop for the most prominent skincare concerns, armed with a variety of Dermatologist-approved solutions to deliver the care your skin needs.

Naturally, I decided to give them a try and find out if Three Ships Beauty could deliver the healthy glow I'd been searching for. Read on to see the results!

We love a good clay mask. And we particularly love Three Ships' Detox Green Tea Antioxidant Clay Mask for its excellent job of drawing out dirt and impurities deeply embedded in our skin. French green clay and green tea extract are high in natural anti-collagenase activities – a fancy process that basically means they decrease collagen loss by 47%. Youthful glow, here we come.

About Three Ships Beauty

The Brand:
Three Ships Beauty creates affordable, all-natural, vegan, clean skincare for all. Female founded and run, they are on a mission to make all-natural skincare affordable and have vowed to never make a product above $40. So jump aboard Three Ships. Your skin and wallet will thank you.

Three Ships Beauty Founders

The Origin Story:
Founded by chemical engineer Laura Burget and business school grad Connie Lo (both 23 years old at the time), Three Ships Beauty was made with a mission to make high quality, natural skincare accessible to everyone. Frustrated by the high costs of natural skincare products that actually worked, Burget and Lo scraped together $4,000 to build a better skincare solution.

On nights and weekends, in addition to their full time jobs, they combined their efforts and expertise and began making all-natural formulations in Lo’s apartment. Burget and Lo knew that many people were priced out of the all-natural beauty scene who wanted desperately to be part of it, and they made a pact to keep each of their products accessibly priced under $40.

My Three Ships Beauty Skincare Lineup

Based on the product recommendations for my skin type, the best Three Ships products for my skin included the  Refresh Papaya + Salicylic Acid Cleanser, Radiance Day Cream moisturizer, Glow Oil serum, and the Detox Green Tea Antioxidant Clay Mask.

Admittedly, because I’m currently using a very high-end (read: pricey!) moisturizer and serum, I decided to go with just the cleanser and mask – for now. Buuuuuut, because I can’t help myself when it comes to skincare products, I went ahead and added both the Detox mask and the Soothe Rosehip Vitamin C mask to my cart (and because they had me at piña colada, along went the Piña Colada Lip Exfoliator, too).

Three Ships Beauty Detox: Masking Up

Masks help further restore and moisturize skin, which is why Three Ships Beauty recommends them as an add-on to your skincare routine – and I, too, swear by them, so I was excited to try these truly all-natural masks from Three Ships.

As an avid sheet-mask user, this was my first trying a powder mask – that is, one I have to mix myself – and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a tad intimidated. I opened the little container only to spill a good amount of chalky powder everywhere (Whoops! All you fellow klutzes, be warned). That said, Three Ships has its formula down to a science, and getting it right was as easy as the instructions said.

Mix one tablespoon of mask powder with a few drops of water (or toner), until a thin paste is formed. You’ll see and know when it’s just the right consistency. I applied the mask evenly to my face using a mask brush (if you’re good with getting messy, your fingers will work just fine). As always, be sure to avoid the eye area when applying masks. Once your face is properly masked up, sit back and relax. The mask will start drying and firming up in just a few minutes; leave it on for 8-10 minutes (though I left mine on for 15, and it felt great!). Once done, just rinse with lukewarm water and pat your face dry. Hello, rejuvenated skin!

While the “masking up” experience was the same with both of my masks, I did have a different experience with each – while I don’t like having to pick favorites, I do have a winner in this case.

The Detox Green Tea Antioxidant Clay Mask
I mean it when I say that this is a game-changing product. After using regularly over the course of a month, I noticed my skin was clearer and softer, and my complexion was more even, brighter with that healthy, nourished, fresh-faced glow.

Near the end of my month-long test, I found myself using less makeup, content with a tinted moisturizer or very light layer of foundation to get ready for the day.

One look at the reviews from fellow Three Ships Beauty buyers was enough to convince me that I clearly am not alone in enjoying these results. Here some of the customer reviews from other happy-faced Three Ships fans:

★★★★★
GOODBYE PORES!

"I was on the hunt for a natural skincare line that wouldn't break the bank but would actually help with my skin. I have oily, acne prone skin that ends up with my pores being fairly noticeable. But I never expected the amazing results I received with this line! This mask is jus the icing on the cake! It is super easy to mix, I like that I can control the consistency since super thick masks tend to be hard to work with and leave a lot of wasted product on your hands/brush. It was easy to mix, went on smooth, and I could feel it working as it dried. My skin was so smooth after, the pores were barely noticeable and my oily skin is now in check! I cannot say enough great things about this mask."

DEFINITELY RECOMMEND!

"Love this product, and have been using for quite some time over the last year. My skin feels so much nicer after use and it seems to clean deeply, reducing texture so it’s a great product to apply after wearing makeup all day long!"

SMELLS AND FEELS AMAZING!

"This is my favorite face mask I have ever used. It works so well at cleaning out my skin and is such a pleasant experience to put on. It pulls out all my impurities leaving me with clearer skin. Was hard for me to figure out how to mix at first and I feel like it calls for more product to make the right paste. Just follow the instructions and you’ll be good. Love love love this all natural detox mask!!"

Three Ships Soothe Rosehip Vitamin C Clay Mask

This is the mask I added to my cart on a whim, but it make sense that it wasn't recommend it for my skin type. While I do have annoying skin, it’s not quite sensitive – and, so, this mask seemed to be just a tad too “meh” for my intended use.

That said, it did leave my skin feeling relaxed and refreshed, so I wouldn’t knock it either. If you do have sensitive skin, this is definitely the mask for you and one you’re sure to love (not to mention, it’s the loveliest shade of Millennial pink).

Leveraging French pink clay (the mildest of clays) and rosehip extract (high in active Vitamin C and carotenoids), Three Ships' Soothe mask helps gently reduce the appearance of skin discoloration, age spots, and wrinkles – gently and without any skin irritation – because no one needs that.

Much like the Detox mask, this one also felt lovely going on, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy it (seriously, masking is one of the most relaxing, self-care things you can do for just a few minutes every week). I just wish it had packed more of a punch to meet my skin’s specific needs.

But all in all, when it comes to quality, effective, all-natural ingredients, you can’t go wrong with either of these Three Ships Beauty masks. Each one comes in powder form in a 20-gram jar that, on average, lasts 15 – 20 uses (seriously!). At $18 each, these may just become the heroes of your beauty cabinet.

Knowing that Three Ships Beauty cares just as much about what goes into its products as what goes into its packaging sends a thoughtful and important nature-led message I can get behind.
