The Bottom Line

There’s a lot of hype around gearing up for your baby. Cribs, play centers, loungers – you name it, it’s at the top of most baby registries or we’re expecting! shopping lists. And, one of the turn-key essentials that most parents want to lock in early is a high chair because, before they know it, their little one will be starting solids. Plus, they’re kinda a cute reminder that you have a wee one in the house, right?

Choosing a high chair means you might be entertaining options like a bare bones $20 model, all the way up to a $300 version complete with cool, functional features. On the higher-end, you’re looking at beautifully designed, transitional high chairs – and there’s good reason they top parents’ wishlists. We compared two of today’s trendiest, luxury options, and one rose to the top. Here’s why we’re living for Lalo’s The Chair, and why it's our top pick when compared to Stokke’s Tripp Trapp.

WHY WE LOVE LALO

Lalo offers modern feeding and playtime must-haves for your little ones, consciously crafted from non-toxic materials. The brand is intentional in their design and offering, providing simple, stylish and easy-to-use items that allow parents to focus more on their bundle of joy and less on unsavory spills and stains.

Lalo Product Showroom

Rooted in a commitment to honesty and transparency, each item is priced fairly and rigorously tested to meet or exceed ASTM Safety Standards – alleviating some of that parenting pressure. To top it off, Lalo donates a portion of sales to nonprofits focused on fertility, perinatal care and education, meaning your purchase contributes to supporting families everywhere.

LALO’S THE CHAIR V. STOKKE’S TRIPP TRAPP

The Price is Right With The Chair

Looking solely at the cost of your high chair purchase, you’re spending $215 for Lalo’s The Chair, complete with transition legs and cushion. Stokke’s Tripp Trapp starts at a whopping $279, where your purchase doesn’t include a tray or a padded seat covering.

Pause – that’s an extra $65 for a chair that you have to pull up to your kitchen table where your baby can and absolutely will smear purees, throw eggs and avocado and spill their sippy cups on your dining furniture.

The Chair can still be placed next to you while you eat, but rest assured your little’s mess will be more contained to their tray than if you go with the Tripp Trapp sans tray add-on. If you want to go the cushion and tray route with Stokke, your Tripp Trapp runs $379 which is $164 more than The Chair Full Kit – without any significantly more appealing features. Plain and simple, the price is right with The Chair.

Functionality is Forever

We’re big fans of functionality – as are most parents who need clear ways to do more with less time and only two hands. Lalo’s The Chair functions as a high chair for babies 4 months+, or when they’re able to sit up unassisted. The high chair can be used until they’re 3 years old, giving it many years of use for the same or multiple kiddos.

Once your little is 1 year old, they can safely transition into the Play Chair if you’ve purchased the Full Kit or the legs separately. The Play Chair turns the high chair into a sleek mini seat that can be pulled up to a table for meal time, engaging in learning activities or partaking in arts and crafts. It’s worth noting that The Play Chair is designed to work with shorter, child-sized tables – meaning you’ll need to purchase one from Lalo or another brand if you want the chair to slide beneath a sturdy surface.

Stokke’s Tripp Trapp is intended for babies 6 months+ and similarly is meant for high chair use until age 3. With an adjustable seat and footplate, the high chair is designed to support your child as he or she grows – and when used as a chair can support an adult up to 242 lbs. What seems appealing is theory might not be as practical as it sounds – or at least wouldn’t be a reason to trade a Tripp Trapp for The Chair.

Most parents shopping for their baby aren’t going to turn their little one’s high chair into an extra adult chair at the table since – besides not matching the rest of your dining setup – the Tripp Trapp serves more as a perch with little back support when fully transitioned as opposed to an ergonomically supportive chair. In that sense, it’s better to opt for Lalo’s The Chair where your little one can have full autonomy of their play and eating area while feeling like the big kid they eventually will be.

Safety is Superior

At the forefront of every parent’s mind is safety because, simply put, it’s superior to every other desire when it comes to picking baby gear. When you take a look at Lalo’s The Chair, it’s clear that it was made with your child’s well-being in mind. Made solely from non-toxic materials, this high chair features a 5-point harness – engineered like carseats to make sure baby stays put. It’s Prop 65 compliant and meets or exceeds ASTM Safety Standards.

Stokke’s Tripp Trapp features similar safe and sound requirements including a 5-point harness, water-based, nontoxic paint, no use of harmful substances in its making, materials are free from bisphenol and phthalates, is certified by JPMA and meets or exceed all ASTM safety standards. With high safety standards met across both products, it boils down to weighing the importance of other key features – namely price, function and design. In those areas, Lalo still takes the cake.

Let’s Talk Looks

Minimalism is hot right now – and honestly gives you visual peace of mind when the rest of the house gets quickly cluttered with baby bits and bobs. The Chair comes in 5 muted tones, each of which blends peacefully into the background no matter where it’s placed. Choose from a creamy Coconut, bold Licorice, earthy Sage, sweet Grapefruit or modern Blueberry – whether you opt for color or not, it won’t compete with your other decor which is amazing. All high chairs feature FSC Certified sustainable beechwood legs, contributing to its sleek design that fits in almost any space.

The Tripp Trapp’s ladder-esque look is clunkier than the clean aesthetic of The Chair which – as most parents know – isn’t desirable given that we’re all ISO pieces that don’t add to the mess. If you have burp cloths, laundry hampers, bottle parts and beyond strewn across the house, we get it! It's more angular and frankly looks less like a high chair at first glance, giving it less of the soft, seamlessly-integrates-into-your-surroundings vibe and makes it more of a serious focal point.

Design and Durability

Gearing up for a baby is expensive – so choosing items that are durable and made to last is key. Lalo’s high chair features strong FSC Certified sustainable beechwood legs and scuff-free feet, so as your child hops in and out there isn’t wear and tear on your floors. Love that! From its dishwasher safe tray to its machine-washable cushion and straps, The Chair is designed to stay in great shape for years to come – despite messy meal times. Plus, setting it up is super simple, especially when compared to the Tripp Trapp. Stokke’s model is similarly easy to clean and made of durable beech and oak woods, but setup is a doozy. We’re talking screws everywhere.

THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT – HANDS-DOWN, LALO WINS

Lalo’s The Chair checks all of our boxes, plus some. From its aesthetic and ability to transform into a mini chair for your mini, to its clear commitment to safety and functional features with honest pricing, it’s the clear winner in this high chair head-to-head. We weren’t as stoked on the Stokke Tripp Trapp – although their safety features seemed in-line with The Chair.

And, let’s be real – there’s a reason the winner here is called The Chair. It’s the only one your little will need from the time they can start solids until they’re coloring the sh*t out of books with half-broken crayons. Since it's made to last, expanding your kiddie chaos with multiples means you'll be set for years to come. Mamas and Dads – it’s time to live your best messy mealtime life with Lalo. We guarantee you won’t regret it.
