Getting Started: Ordering & Assembling Your Jogging Stroller

Whether you're counting down the days until the arrival of your little one or enjoying every moment of being a new parent, the last thing you want to stress about is strollers. Two of the most popular jogging strollers on the market are BOB's Alterrain Pro and Guava Family's Roam Crossover. The Alterrain Pro comes in 3 colors and sports mountain bike style tires and suspension. The Roam Crossover has a lightweight but durable aluminum frame, airless rubber bike tires, and 3-D folding technology.  Both are great options but let’s take a deeper look into the key features of these two strollers.

BOB Alterrain Pro out of the box, before assembly.

After countless hours of building nursery furniture, sterilizing baby bottles, and packing a hospital bag, the last thing you want to worry about is putting together a stroller. Guava Family's Roam Crossover comes fully put together and folded in the box. As soon as you open it up, all you have to do is cut a few zip-ties and you're ready to run! However, BOB's Alterrain Pro needs assembly before you're ready to roll. The assembly is pretty minimal- installing the wheels and sliding the canopy into place, but it was definitely a two-person job. I could not imagine doing it with pregnancy hormones surging or a little one crawling around.

Folding the Strollers

Guava Family's Roam is on the left, BOB Alterrain Pro is on the right

Guava Family's Roam makes setup and folding as easy as 1-2-3. To fold, all you have to do is push the handlebars down, lock the tires, and pull the red tab under the seat. The folding instructions are also printed in multiple places on the stroller so you have an easy reference. The 3-D fold technology means the tires fold in together under the handlebars which makes it super easy to carry and transport with nothing sticking out. BOB's Alterrain Pro was much more difficult to figure out how to fold- I actually had to watch a video tutorial and wasn't sure when it was actually fully folded since it wasn't actually much smaller. This stroller has large, mountain bike style tires that make it more awkward to fold and store, although they are very nice for rough terrain.

Trunk Test

Being a mom doesn't necessarily mean you need to drive a mini-van, but if you needed some extra storage for your gear, chances are you probably drive some kind of SUV. I recently upgraded to a Mazda CX-5, a compact SUV, so I was excited to put these strollers (& my trunk space) to the test.

Guava Family Roam

Despite being a full-size stroller, the Roam folds 50% smaller than competitors. When stored in the back of my car, I still have more than half of my trunk space. Whether you're traveling with a pack 'n play, groceries, or luggage, the Roam ensures that you still have the room you need! The small size is perfect for storage during winter months or in an apartment.

BOB Alterrain Pro

BOB's Alterrain Pro only fits horizontally, so it takes up basically my entire trunk. The fold is not as intuitive, and the handlebars blocked a little bit of my rearview visibility. Due to the way the BOB folds, there wasn't even much room to fit anything on the right side by the wheels. If you travel with a lot of gear or need a lot of space on a daily basis, the Alterrain Pro is probably not a good fit.

What’s the Cost Comparison?

Guava Family Roam

BOB's Alterrain Pro stroller retails for $699.99 plus shipping, depending on which retailer you purchase from, since they don't sell on their own website. Guava Family's Roam is currently priced at $549.95 with free shipping. Plus, they offer an infant car seat adapter for $49.95, so you can easily transform the Roam instead of having to buy a separate bassinet stroller. You can buy the Roam and the infant car seat adapter together for less than just the cost of BOB's Alterrain Pro.
