About Outer

Outer currently sells outdoor furniture like sofas, sectionals, coffee tables, and chairs, as well as accessories like rugs, pillows, and their unique bug bite blanket. Outer furniture is available in wicker or teak, and the cushion fabric is available in Pacific Fog Grey or Palisades Cream. So there’s no choice fatigue when putting together your outdoor space.

Why We Love Them

When it comes to outdoor furniture, the pickings are fairly slim. Either you put a comfortable, expensive couch outside and risk it being ruined, or you use cheap, uncomfortable, water-resistant materials. Outer asks the question “Why choose between comfort and convenience?” Their furniture is not only supportive and soft, but also highly resistant to all of life’s little hazards, whether it be a spilled drink or a thunderstorm. Oh, and it looks great in any outdoor space from your backyard or patio to your city roof deck.

Origin Story

All across America, Terry Lin and Jake Liu saw huge amounts of unused patios, balconies, terraces, and porches, along with their respective rusty furniture. Together, they decided to help bring families back outside, with the aid of some excellent chairs and couches. Using state of the art fabric technology, Lin and Liu developed a weather-resistant, outdoor couch that feels like any other comfy couch in your home but holds up in all of the elements. The two founders also introduced a unique concept to their brand: the showroom. Customers have the ability to invite potential customers in to see their furniture setup and get paid for doing it. Outer has become a more than welcome addition to the market, especially during COVID which has moved so many social events to outdoor spaces.

The Science

Outer furniture uses a patented OuterShell™ cover, which quickly and easily rolls out and over the cushions, protecting from weather, mildew, dirt, and debris. The cushions have an additional protective waterproof barrier, which covers polypropylene batting and elastic memory foam; they are the perfect combination of durability and comfort. Even the wicker backing frame is resistant to the weather; made from recycled plastic bottles and wrapped around a powder-coated alloy, these sofas and chairs will stand the test of time.

The Soul

Americans have been shown to spend 90% of every single day indoors. We often have patios, balconies, porches, and decks, but it’s not very often that we use them. Studies show that families, and people in general, are healthier and better-connected when they get to spend time together out of doors. This is what Terry Lin and Jake Liu wanted to and have accomplished when building Outer: bringing Americans back outside, together.
