Why We Love Thrive Market

Busy isn’t what it used to be – it’s ten times worse. Work, family, leisure, community, fitness, chill time; some weeks we have no idea how to fit everything in. On top of that, most people really want to support ethical companies – but don’t have the time or mental energy to check the sourcing strategies, environmental commitments, and workplace practices of the dozens of brands they use every week.

Fortunately, Thrive Market is here to help its customers reclaim their time. It runs a carefully curated grocery store involving four main categories of food, supplements, home and beauty/bath/body. The number of products sits at around 6,000 – large enough to ensure plenty of variety, but small enough (traditional stores carry around 40,000 items) that the Thrive Market team can ensure that each of the brands featured in their “shop” promise products that are great for customers and great for the planet.

The TL; DR

  • One-stop shop for organic staples
  • Over 6,000 great items available
  • Great search and personalization features
  • Ethical sourcing and recyclable packaging
  • Low price promise – plus a great value membership club

Thrive Market Origin Story

Est. 2015

Thrive Market was founded in 2016 by Nick Green, Gunnar Lovelace, Kate Mulling, and Sasha Siddhartha, who realized shoppers were moving to online due to its value and convenience but were finding the experience with existing options clunky and confusing.  In fact, Lovelace had been raised in a Californian organic farm, and had directly witnessed the benefits from affordable healthy food.  At the heart of its online store is a guided shopping journey. Customers specify their preferences – for example, dietary, ingredients, social priorities, BIPOC-owned, fair trade, recycled packaging. Thrive Market then “takes out the guesswork” by highlighting the products that meet these criteria.  Sasha Siddhartha has explained the ultimate compliment is when the store is described as a ‘helpful personal shopper’.

The Science of Thrive Market

Thrive Market constantly refines the shopper experience to make sure it’s as intuitive, seamless and speedy as possible.   as a result, speed to checkout has improved 25% (48 minutes to 36 minutes) in recent months – compare that to the two hours you often need to set aside for a traditional shop. Recent and planned innovations all serve to accelerate the process even faster – such as an adaptive reorder system, and a feature that adds all the ingredients in a given recipe to a shopping cart via a single click. Now that’s food for thought!

The Soul of Thrive Market

Thrive Market offers great value membership – just $5 per month entitles customers to fast, free shipping, discounts, free gifts and samples. However, the company is keen that healthy, ethical grocery products are not limited to families who can afford to monthly fee.  For every paid membership, the company donates free membership to a family in need (its ‘Thrive Gives’ program). Additionally, free membership is available to students, teachers, veterans and first responders. This means the largest possible number of people are able to express their support for ethical businesses – whether its Thrive Market’s seafood suppliers (who fish in a sustainable, traceable manner) or its coffee farming partners on whose behalf Thrive Market is investing significantly in locally based infrastructure projects.
