Why We Love Rumpl

It’s time to throw a wet blanket over bad blankets. Blanket technology had hardly changed for a century – yet, during the same period, there’s been amazing innovation that’s improved apparel, outdoor gear and activewear. At least until Rumpl redesigned the concept of the blanket, using natural and synthetic down insulation to create blankets that are water and stain resistant, portable and packable – plus warm and cozy into the bargain. Even better – the blankets come in a range of lively designs to brighten any room – such as the striking Joshua Tree or the Woven Daydream. It’s a blanket banquet from Rumpl.

The TL; DR

  • Blankets that are as warm and cozy as sleeping bags
  • Huge range of blankets – indoor and outdoor, puffy and fleece
  • Eye-catching colorful designs
  • Use 100% recycled materials: over 5 million discarded plastic bottles recycled every year
  • 1% of revenue donated to environmental non-profits
  • Free shipping and returns on orders over $49

The Rumpl Origin Story

Est. 2013

California has given the world Hollywood, Alcatraz, Yosemite, Disneyland. It was also the setting for the creation of Rumpl. On a ski trip, founder Wylie Robinson and his companion found themselves marooned in a broken-down van up a dirt road in subzero temperatures with no cell reception. Using their sleeping bags for warmth, they quickly realized these gave greater comfort than any traditional blanket. This revelation stayed with them, even after they’d been rescued (we’re not quite sure how they made it back, but history records they survived the ordeal).

Back in a cramped San Francisco apartment, the pair borrowed a sewing machine … and created the first Rumpl. One Kickstarter campaign later, and the company was motoring – and, despite being unable to agree terms with investors during a Shark Tank appearance, Rumpl has since gone from strength to strength.

The Science of Rumpl

Rumpl has selected (and occasionally invented) insulation that works no matter the condition. Synthetic insulation include hollow fiber, and the premium range 100% post-consumer recycled NanoLoft® insultation. Natural insulation includes duck down and goose down: sustainable sourced goose down feathers have, says Rumpl, an unmatched warmth-to-weight ratio due to being highly compressible – they’re also treated with a hydrophonic coating to prevent loss of warmth when wet. And for anyone with sub-WWF biceps who’s about to embark on a long trek, you’ll be delighted to learn the application of science had made for a very lightweight result: just 2.1 lbs for a one-person blanket.

The Soul of Rumpl

Rumpl says it’s committed to sourcing environmentally responsible materials, offsetting its carbon footprint, environmental advocacy, and supporting under-represented communities.  That’s quite a mouthful, but in Rumpl’s case, it’s backed up by admirable business practices.   The synthetic insulation and polyester in their best-selling products recycles millions of discarded plastic bottles each year. The carbon emissions of the entire company are offset to ensure Rumpl is climate neutral. Rumpl is a proud member of ‘1% for the planet’.

Rumpl supports many grassroot causes including Sheltersuit Foundation, the High Fives Foundation, the Episcopal Services Navigation Center, the Trevor Project, Save the Waves and First Peoples Fund. If you’ve noticed a distinctive outdoor theme to these causes, you’ve hit the bullseye. With its passion for the ‘hardcore gear and epic pursuits’ of outdoor life, one of Rumpl’s principle values is to ‘Embrace the Adventure’.
