Why We Love Them

Through their crowd-sourced model, Minted has a community of over 1000 artists across the US and the world who they support and nurture so they can grow.

Origin Story

Founder Mariam Naficy, who grew up in 5 countries across the Middle East and Africa, wanted to use the internet to connect the beautiful art she saw during her travels, so she created Minted. In 2008, Minted held their first “design challenge” calling for artists to submit desings for save the date cards. The 66 entries they received from that competition marked the beginning of their crowd-sourced marketplace. After some bootstrapping by founder Mariam Naficy while the company figured out its exact niche, Minted was able to expand into the art and home décor businesses while keeping her promise to empower artists. Since then, Minted has continued to be a leader in the online art and décor landscape by selling products in dozens of categories across home, wedding, stationery, art, kids and holiday, while continuing to prioritize their 1000+ artists around the world.

The TL;DR

  • Enables artists across the world to sell their designs to consumers
  • Provides resources to artists to help grow their business
  • Offers consumers unique products across over a dozen categories

The Science & The Soul

The Science

Minted currently hosts an international community of artists and designers across all 50 states and in over 100 countries. They enable artists of different backgrounds and specialties such as painters, marketers, textile designers, illustrators, and many more, to sell designs on Minted.com through their crowd-sourced business model. Artists submit their designs to monthly challenges, the Minted community and everyday consumers vote on their favorite designs, and then Minted sells the winners on their website, giving the artists a commission for every product sold. Minted’s platform also showcases the artist profile while you’re shopping so you know exactly who you are supporting, where they’re from, and shop their other designs.

The Soul

The soul of Minted is the community of independent artists. Not only does Minted help artists make a fair living wage by selling their products on Minted.com, but they also give artists the capabilities to run their businesses utilizing their manufacturing, fulfillment, and customer service resources.  Minted’s key principles are to “be transparent”, “put design first”, “be an enabler, not a doer”, and “think long term”, all of which are embodied by their website, community, and corporate team.
