Who Is Boll & Branch?

Boll & Branch is the brainchild of Missy and Scott Tannen. They were on the hunt for sheets to outfit their new King bed and were unable to find anything they felt comfortable with from many aspects. They realized that most textile companies aren’t great for the environment or the people who produce the products.

Boll and branch company story

Since they weren’t comfortable not knowing where the end product was being produced and how, they decided to create their own company with 100% transparency.

Boll & Branch took a bit of time to develop after the idea struck them. But they wanted to be sure they were doing the best they could for the environment and the people who are producing their products as they could be. This is the most important mission that Boll & Branch has, other than creating luxuriously soft, long-lasting products, of course.

Pros

  • 100% organic cotton
  • Ethically made, fair trade certified (both factory and cotton)
  • Feels soft out of the box
  • High quality sheets
  • Extremely aesthetically pleasing
  • 30 night trial period
  • 300 thread count
  • Free shipping within the domestic US

Cons

  • Made to fit many mattress sizes, so if you’re mattress is on the thinner side, you might have a lot of excess fabric
  • Not wrinkle proof and require ironing
  • Fairly pricey for sheets, even though they’re organic

Boll & Branch Fit & Feel

I had heard great things about Boll & Branch for a while, so I was excited to finally try them out. Upon receiving my order of the Boll & Branch Signature Hemmed Sheet Set, the first thing I noticed was the packaging.

The sheet set was wrapped nicely in a fancy box that contained a cotton bag with the sheets inside.

unboxing boll and branch sheets

This cotton bag included nice ribbon ties. Not realizing they were part of the cotton sheet bag to store the sheets in, I inadvertently cut the ribbon ties. At least I’ll know better for next time, but it was an unfortunate mistake on my part.

We washed the sheets according to the manufacturer’s suggestion and then put them on our bed. The issue we ran across was that they were exceedingly large for our 10” mattress. So, we ended up having to tuck the excess fabric in around the bed frame.

Testing Boll and Branch Signature Sheets

However, even with that minor setback, they were luxuriously soft to the touch. For the amount of time we’ve had them so far, they just get a bit softer with each wash. So, our hope is that continues to be the case because they were already pretty darn soft to begin with.

In order to be completely objective, especially at this price point, we wanted to put these sheets through a few tests to see how they did. The first test we performed was to see whether the color would bleed from these sheets.

Boll and branch Color Bleed Test

In order to do this, we wet a paper towel, pressed it into the pillow case, and then went over it with a rolling pin. We took before and after pictures of the paper towel to see if there was any discernible change in color.

This would have meant that bleeding was occurring. And there was none to be seen, so we were really happy with that test.

Boll and branch Color Bleed Test Results

The other big test that was important to us was the quality of the workmanship. In order to test this, we took a fine tooth comb to the fitted sheet, flat sheet, and pillow cases.

We were searching for any imperfections, loose threads, or any other quality concerns having to do with manufacturing. Happily, we were unable to find any discrepancies.

We also tested them side by side with Brooklinen to see if there was any significant difference between the two brands. We were looking for quality and performance and were hard pressed to find much, if any, difference. Besides the price tag, of course. Overall, we were very pleased with the product as a whole.

Is Boll & Branch Good Quality?

When it comes to transparency, Boll & Branch sets the bar pretty high. And for something you’re going to sleep on every night for years, that’s kind of important. The fact that they put out an impact report regularly helps to break down the nuts and bolts of their entire process.

They start by sourcing 100% organic cotton farmers in India. By doing this, they are helping these farmers earn more than a living wage, as well as improving their health and potential life span. Plus, by using 100% organic cotton, they are reducing the amount of water needed by 91%. This is huge in the grand scheme of things!

Boll and Branch Fair Trade Cotton

Plus, all of the products Boll & Branch produces are Oeko-Tex 100 Standard Certified. This means that their products adhere to high product safety and have been tested for toxic chemicals. The brand says they also use third party testing to confirm that all of the raw materials meet the international standards for organic farming.

In actuality, according to their impact report, they have 11 different certifying bodies to ensure practices across all boards are being met. These include:

• Child labor
• Health and safety standards for workers
• Voluntary employment, paid overtime, no abuse or discrimatination
• Fair wages
• Traceability
• Safe for processors and consumers
• Proper treatment and/or disposal of water and waste
• Organic certifications
• Sustainable practices

Boll and Branch Quality

The factories they employ in India, Portugal, and the US are all Fair Trade Certified. This means that these factories must adhere to the quality standards of the certifying body, which include:

• Fairness
• Economic Equality
• Ethical Sourcing

The fact that Boll & Branch became the first textile manufacturer of linens speaks volumes about their dedication to quality. The quality of life, quality of their products, and quality of the planet as a whole. To be honest, this is more certifying bodies than any other company I’ve run across yet. Which means they are exceedingly driven by creating a positive impact on the world, as well as high quality products.

Are Boll & Branch Sheets Worth It?

The quality of Boll & Branch certainly meets higher standards than most other sheet companies today. So, if quality and a positive global impact are important qualities when you purchase sheets, then yes, these are worth it.

The fact that they have a high level of transparency about all of the raw goods and processes is extremely unheard of in today’s market. Just the fact that they do this, makes their sheets worth it, in my opinion. The fact that they have a 1 year warranty also doesn’t hurt either.

But, if you want a luxury cotton sheet set and those things aren’t as important to you, then you may want to look elsewhere. Because Boll & Branch, after all, is a luxury company gearing luxury products towards those who can afford them. And that just might not be the best fit for everyone.

Boll & Branch Summary

All in all, Boll & Branch really sets the standards high in the sheets game. They source and create high quality products, while also doing what they can to increase the quality of life for their producers and employees. They have a generous return policy and a decent warranty also. Plus the fact that their products are created to last a long time and feel great for the entirety of the lifespan doesn’t hurt either.

However, they are quite a bit pricier than some of their competitors. So they may not be the best fit for everyone. But, if you want to embark on the luxury sheet experience and create a positive impact on the world and the environment, then I can’t think of a better way to go than Boll & Branch.
